Durborow, who grew up in Illinois, attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on a four-year school scholarship, and then enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. Following his discharge he married and eventually moved to California where he worked for North American Aviation in publishing management for 20 years.

“Four or five years before I retired, I started painting again so I’d have something to do,” Durborow says. “I started going to art show to see what was being painted, and one of the artist recommended that I join an art club.

Durborow began doing still life painting in pastels. “I want to get the feeling of the Old Masters with the dark backgrounds,” he says. “It’s a challenge. Not many pastelists do it in the style I do. I want to be different.”

When he isn’t painting outdoors, Durborow is working in his home studio in Fullerton, California. A member of the California Art Club and the San Gabriel Fine Arts Association, he has won several awards for his work, including one last fall from the Pastel Society of America.

Although Durborow loves painting in California, he also enjoys traveling and painting what he sees along the way. He’s traveled to China, and Europe. Durborow was honored recently, when he received signature member status with the Pastel Society of America.
