Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson grew up near Indianapolis, Indiana. Summers were spent in Michigan roaming the ravines, woods, wild berry patches and beaches around an 1908 family cottage on the Lake Michigan shore. Jack continued bringing his own family of four children to the Lake, passing along the memories to the next generation. The influence of those early years is apparent in all his work. More »

He attended the school of architecture at University of Michigan and then spent two years in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Hornet. Jack then attended and received his B.P.A. from Art Center College in Los Angeles, California.

The next twelve years were spent as an advertising Art Director for the firms of Foote, Cone and Belding and J. Walter Thompson in Los Angeles. He since then has been working in the film industry as a Production Illustrator and Conceptual Artist for feature films. Some of the films Jack has worked on are “INDEPENDENCE DAY”, “CONGO”, “THE SHADOW”, “TOYS”, “EDWARD SCISSORHANDS”, “HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER”, “BEETLEJUICE” and many others. As a Production Illustrator, he sketches or paints the film sets before they are built. Part of this responsibility is suggesting designs, color, position and scale of the sets. He additionally designs logos, themes, effects and storyboards.

Jack’s paintings have been in traveling exhibitions throughout California, the West and the Nation. He has been in numerous regional and national shows including the National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor Society Annuals. Jack’s painting, “YOSEMITE BRIDGE” was chosen in the top 200 out of 3,000 entries in the Arts for the Park’s 1994 competition. His work has recently been in the Carnegie & Natural History Museums.

Jack Johnson was former board member of the National Watercolor Society and is currently a member of the California Art Club.
