His formal interest in wildlife art was enhanced in 1984 in Big Timber, Montana while attending a workshop with Robert Bateman. He spent a week learning from this master.

Ray's art training includes workshops with Jack Hines, Jessica Zemsky, and seminars with Mario Fernandez. He also has received formal training at Mt. San Antonio College, The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and private lessons.

Ray has also attended recent workshops with internationally known artist Lee Kromshroeder.

Ray has benefited as an artist, having had Earl Cacho, Mario Fernandez, Robert Bateman, and Robert Cowel critiqued his work. He is currently studying with nationally recognized artist Kirk Miller.

His favorite mediums include acrylics and watercolors, which he uses on paper, canvas, and masonite board. He is a member of the Southern California Wildlife Artist Association.
