D. Michael Thomas

Graduating from the University of Wyoming in 1977 with a degree in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, you might say D. Michael Thomas knows animal subjects from the inside out.  From a lifetime of hands-on experience, keen observation and growing up working on cattle ranches in remote Western Wyoming, not only gives Thomas' bronzes authenticity of form and movement, but personality and feeling.  "Some of my bronzes have very unique stories and are chapters from my life that speak not only to the individuals who've been there and done that, but also to those who find romance in the cowboy's lifestyle".  This statement is backed up by the fact that Thomas' work has sold from coast to coast and abroad. With no formal training, D. Michael Thomas has been sculpting since 1976, showing and selling throughout his 16 year agri-business career in Buffalo, Wyoming.  During this time, Thomas has learned the intricacies of sculpting and the bronzing process through study, hard work, trial and error, and long hours of practice with some instruction from professionals.

Along the way, he's had some great critiques and encouragement from fellow artists and art enthusiasts including Duane Byers, Fred Fellows, Bill Nebecker, Harry Jackson and Ginger Renner, among others, who helped seal the lid for his determination to succeed.

In 1993, he took the "Big Plunge" into full-time sculpting, when a local bank recognized his potential and commissioned two monument bronzes depicting the "Johnson County Cattle War".

Since that time, D. Michael Thomas' career has snowballed.  In just the past few years, he's been the recipient of many awards including the State of Wyoming Governor's Art Award;  Best of Show at the Phippen Western Art Show in Prescott, AZ;  the Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley, CA and the Spirit of the West Show in Cheyenne, WY.  He has also received the Phippen Foundation Award for Museum Quality work and People's Choice Award at the Southwest Art in the Wine Country Show in Calistoga, CA.  His work can be found in many galleries throughout the western United States and was recently featured in the Jan-Feb 99 and July-Aug, 2001 issues of Art of the West magazine.
