Quick
Draw Challenges Artists in Los Olivos
Saturday, August 16, 2008, starting at 10
am.
Set
in the heart of the old stagecoach route, amidst premier wine country and
fine art galleries, is the charming small town of Los Olivos. Each year
this historic community is host to the annual Quick Draw. The Quick Draw
is an exciting, fast-paced event in which participating artists from the
fine art galleries in Los Olivos race against the clock to complete a drawing,
painting, or sculpture within 45 minutes!
The Los Olivos Gallery Organization is host to the 22nd Annual Los
Olivos Quick Draw. Participating galleries include: Artist Guild of Santa
Ynez
Valley, Details Boutique and Art Gallery, Gallery Los Olivos, Judith
Hale Gallery, Sansone Studios, Wildling Art Museum, and Young’s Gallery.
Jim Farnum is back to serve as Master of Ceremonies to this incredibly
exciting event. After the Quick Draw the paintings will immediately
be auctioned off in a live auction. A silent auction will be taking place
with items donated by artists, galleries, and merchants. In the afternoon
the Rotary Club of the Santa Ynez Valley puts on a BBQ and people enjoy
themselves as they stroll between galleries and watch artists demonstrate
at their respective galleries. The Judith Hale Gallery and Gallery
Los
Olivos will feature an impressive line up of artists.
Native Californian artists Jean
Requa Lubin and Ray Sevilla both excel
in the skill of depicting wildlife and landscape.
Jean
Requa Lubin grew up in
Samoa and Juneau, Alaska, and these far-away places inspire her expressive
paintings of wildlife and wild lands. “I was so fortunate to enjoy a childhood
in such wonderfully exotic and inspiring places,” says Jean. And
the long-lasting influences of these far-away lands are at the heart of
her artistic spirit. With painterly realism, Jean specializes in Western/Equine
and Wildlife art.
Ray
Sevilla's formal interest in wildlife, which
was enhanced during a workshop in Montana, is also apparent in
his art. His favorite mediums include acrylics and watercolors, which
he uses on
paper, canvas, and masonite board.
Jack Johnson and Sheryl Knight are two
artists who both enjoy painting with a variety of mediums including
watercolor, oil, acrylic, and gouche.
Sheryl’s strong, expressive style could
best be described as varying from loose realism to impressionistic. Her
subject matter includes much of the local scenery of her area, as well
as other parts of California.
Jack
Johnson was raised in Indiana, and spent summers
on Lake Michigan, which heavily influences his artwork today.
Johnson first worked in advertising and then in the film industry as
a production illustrator.
His movie credits include Jurassic Park III, The
Perfect Storm,
Toys, Edward Scissorhands, and Big Fish, for which he was the art director.
Quick Draw favorite Kelly
Donovan will return this year to dazzle
spectators. Oil, watercolor, pencil and bronze are Kelly’s media. From the time
he could pick up a pencil as a young boy, Donovan has immersed himself
in cowboy art. He loves the old West and does careful research to ensure
the authenticity of his work. Commissions include two pieces of cowboy
art for the Susan G. Komen Foundation Benefits Auction and Bull Riders
Only for limited edition prints and a calendar cover.
Long time resident of the Santa Barbara area, Tom
DeWalt studied
studio art and art history at UCSB and SBCC. Tom’s background includes illustration
for newspapers and magazines, evidenced in the beautiful design-minded
compositions of his canvases.
Gallery Los Olivos artists Vicki Andersen, Julie Fish, Cathy
Quiel and Camille Dellar
all bring great talent to the Los Olivos Quick Draw event. Vicki,
a native to California, is known for colorful impressionistic
works in
acrylic
and oil. She has painted several commissioned murals and is very
active promoting
the arts in her community. Julie Fish is not only a fantastic
artist, but also a teacher. In her words, “Getting away
from the canvas, I squint my eyes and let my imagination take
over… I don’t censor silly
ideas. I have learned to trust them.” Cathy Quiel is a
noted watercolorist who captures images through a vivid application
of pigment. It is a feeling
of optimism, light and glowing translucency that is appealing
in her work. Camille Dellar is a native of Santa Barbara, where
the beautiful foothills
helped develop her keen observation of landscape. When painting "en
plein air," the true colors of nature and the atmosphere
of the day inspire Camille.
Carol Theroux, Vel
Miller and Joe Milazzo all derive inspiration
from Western and Native American subjects.
Carol
Theroux portrays the
traditional values of
Native American life in her landscapes and personal portraits,
drawing inspiration from her Cherokee heritage. She was a featured
artist
in
Southwest Art in 1983 and included in Who’s Who in American Art in 1993.
Equally
at home in sculpture and painting, Vel
Miller's portrayals of Western and
Indian subjects are strong yet imbued with a tenderness that
speaks of quiet understanding.
Proud to be named the official artist for NRCHA, Joe
Milazzo has been commissioned to do the portraits of the inductees
to the Cow Horse Hall of Fame. His delicate yet intricate pen and ink
work speaks to a time
in our not-so-distant past that honors the legend of the cowboy.
Grace Schlesier, Vic Riesau, Gordon
Luce, Lynelle
Echeverria,
and Dirk Foslien all bring unique perspective to their landscapes.
Grace
Schlesier is
a member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionists
and
the National
Academy
of Professional Plein Air.
Vic
Riesau is a founding artist of the prestigious
Masters of the American West art show sponsored by the Autry
Museum. He recently organized a unique plein air expedition to
remote Canyon
de Chelly
for 20 of California’s best known painters.
Gordon
Luce attempts
to realistically portray nature without being overly literal.
He feels that what is most important is the feeling a scene invokes.
Lynelle
Echeverria has lived all her life on a ranch, observing and studying livestock
and wildlife. She conveys the beauty that surrounds her and the drama
of contemporary
ranch life.
Dirk
Foslien, a native Californian, attended the
Muse Gallery & Studio
in Baltimore, Maryland. His still-life and landscape renderings incorporate
expressiveness that Dirk feels is Spirit-driven.
Mark Greenaway, Joe
Mancuso’s and Richard
Myer round out this
incredible line up of artists.
Mark
Greenaway has always favored wildlife
and nature.
His wild fowl and birds of prey, in oil, watercolor and pastel,
have created
a large
following of art collectors.
Joe
Mancuso’s lifelong love of drawing
led him to pursue a degree in art from Sonoma State University. Inspired
by California Landscape and the beauty of the West, he uses pastels with
varying styles of expression to create works that evoke emotion and transport
the viewer to places of wonder and beauty.
Finally, Richard
Myer has designed
for Walt Disney Studios and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Richard
was commissioned to sculpt the marker for John Wayne’s unmarked grave in Newport,
CA.
Don’t miss a moment to see these accomplished artists in this fast
paced creative challenge. The day begins with an introduction of the artist
at 10:30 am, and Quick Draw at 11 am. The Quick Draw is immediately followed
by a live Auction at noon. Other Quick Draw events include a silent auction
that starts at 10 am and ends after the live auction. When you start to
feel hungry fill your stomach with BBQ in the park which continues from
11:30 am to 2 pm. Artist Demonstrations and Receptions take place at various
galleries until 5 pm.
